Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease is an obstruction of the coronary arteries. The risk factors of coronary artery disease include elevated cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, family history of premature atherosclerosis, and hyperlipidemia. In chronic coronary artery disease the most common symptom is angina or chest discomfort. But coronary artery disease may also occur in individuals with silent ischemia that is without the occurrence of chest discomfort. Individuals with severe obstructions are an increased risk for both heart attack and sudden cardiac death. Cardiac evaluation including exercise testing is an important tool for the early identification and risk assessment of individuals underlying coronary artery disease.
